A guy sat near meThe flight was about to take off when a guy my age rushed onto the plane. He plunked into an aisle seat and settled in. Lights dimmed, and the movie started. Six months later, I quit my job, moved to California, and started life as a freelance consultant. I've never returned to corporate work and still have a soft spot for that in-flight movie, "A Simple Twist of Fate."

Republicans are rallying around IVF access after a controversial Alabama Supreme Court ruling. The issue has been further fueled by a House bill to recognize human life at fertilization. Democratic candidate Elissa Slotkin, who is running against Rogers for Senate, pointed out that Rogers has co-sponsored four bills with similar language to the House bill while in Congress. President Joe Biden's campaign and Vice President Kamala Harris have also lobbed criticism regarding the Alabama Supreme Court decision, specifically calling out Trump. What’s happening in Alabama is a direct result of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

CNN —For me, writing a haiku a day began as a practice on my birthday, October, 2022. As my birthday rolled around that fall, the idea of writing a haiku a day was simply a way of promising myself that that day, I’d steady myself make note of — ha — just one thing. No matter the day, I was sure I could find a way to write down one sentence, one spattering of roughly 17 syllables. Tink Boord-Dill wrote in that liked that he loved writing haiku because it was daily creativity without performance pressure. Robin from Maryland wrote “the daily writing of seventeen syllables quickly created a rhythm to my thinking and even my walking….

“I come from show people,” the sculptor and installation artist Karon Davis said in an interview on Wednesday. “The minute I was born, I was handed tap shoes, ballet shoes.” She’s only half joking: her mother, Nancy Bruner, was a ballerina; her sister, Naja, who died at the age of 16, was an aspiring ballerina; and her father is the Tony- and Emmy-award-winning actor, dancer and singer Ben Vereen. That immersion inspired her recent exhibition, “Beauty Must Suffer,” which opened on Oct. 12 at Salon 94 in Manhattan. On the second floor, plaster children practice at the barre, dancers rest, bow and stretch alongside floor-to-ceiling columns composed of pink tutus and piles of “dead” toe shoes. (Until fairly recently, the major makers of ballet slippers didn’t produce a diverse range of colors.)

The effort against Issue 1, which would amend the constitution to protect abortion rights, raised just under $10 million in the same period, according to Thursday's filings. The campaign against Issue 1, called Protect Women Ohio, accepted more than half its donations in the final months of the race from Protect Women Ohio Action Inc., a committee associated with the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. It's been harder for campaigns against abortion rights to get traction, Lenkowsky said. In Ohio, an August special election that would have swayed November's election went in the direction of abortion rights supporters, which likely made anti-abortion donors less willing to keep giving. Amy Natoce, press secretary of Protect Women Ohio, criticized the pro-Issue 1 campaign's outside funding in a statement to The Associated Press.

CNN —The South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday reversed a temporary block on the state’s abortion restrictions, with four justices agreeing and one dissenting in three separate opinions. Henry McMaster signed the Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act in May, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic and several other medical providers filed a lawsuit in state court to try to stop it. The state filed an emergency petition asking the South Carolina Supreme Court, which is comprised of five men, to act quickly on the case. “Moreover, the implication is that women are solely responsible for a couple’s unexpected pregnancy, possibly due to the lack of birth control. But what about situations where birth control fails?

Around 30 killer whales were spotted playing in Monterey Bay for more than eight hours on Sunday. Six of the whales were also captured in April attacking adult gray whales in a rare encounter. "It was the best killer whale encounter I've had and I've been studying them for 30 years," Nancy Black, a marine biologist with Monterey Bay Whale Watch and director of the nonprofit California Killer Whale Project, told Insider. Monterey Bay Whale Watch said the gray whales ultimately survived the attack but were badly injured. The unusual playful display comes as killer whales near Spain and Portugal have increasingly been damaging and even sinking boats.

Rare sighting of killer whales off New England coast
  + stars: | 2023-06-14 | by ( Amaya Mcdonald | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —New England Aquarium researchers spotted something unusual on Sunday afternoon during an aerial survey — a group of four killer whales swimming just 40 miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Killer whales, also known as orcas, are more commonly seen in areas surrounding the Arctic ice-edge and the Caribbean, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Katherine McKenna, assistant research scientist at the New England Aquarium in Boston, was the first to notice the group, or pod. Another atypical killer whale sighting — involving particularly large numbers — also occurred last weekend in coastal waters on the other side of the United States, in California’s Monterey Bay. “That was the best sighting I’ve seen in my 35 years of killer whale research,” Black told CNN.

Baker Hughes generally aims to return 60% to 80% of its free cash flow to shareholders. Photo: ali haider/ShutterstockBaker Hughes ’s new finance chief wants to prioritize raising dividends over share buybacks, a philosophical shift for the oil-field-services company as it nears the end of a restructuring aimed at lifting profit margins and reducing costs. The Houston-based company is planning to evaluate this summer the pace and rate it would like to increase the dividend over time, with the intention of making a recommendation to the board later this year, said Chief Financial Officer Nancy Buese , who has served in the role for roughly six months.
There are supports, but a magician hid some of them in floor-to-ceiling bookcases and threaded others through wisteria-laden trellises. Though labeled Midcentury Modern, his houses are nothing like the better known Midcentury Modern works of architects like Richard Neutra, which are composed of flat, white surfaces. And, though labeled organic, they are nothing like the better-known organic works of Frank Lloyd Wright, which tend to hug the ground. Mr. Davis’s houses aren’t flat, or white, or low. They soar, in a style that Hans Baldauf, the author of a new book about Mr. Davis, calls “wood expressionism.” Mr. Davis himself liked to call his approach Forgotten Modern.
The Food and Drug Administration is changing the informational packaging of the emergency contraceptive pill, Plan B One-Step, to clarify that it is not an abortion pill, the federal agency announced Friday. Plan B is an over-the-counter drug that can be taken as a backup method of birth control to reduce the chance of pregnancy after unprotected sex. "Plan B One-Step will not work if a person is already pregnant, meaning it will not affect an existing pregnancy," the FDA said in a release. Until now, packaging for Plan B and generic versions of the drug have erroneously claimed that taking the pill might be able to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. The FDA said since Plan B prevents pregnancy by acting on ovulation, "well before implantation," it does not cause abortions.

Baker is the first oilfield services firm to report quarterly results, and its beat bodes well for rivals Schlumberger (SLB.N) and Halliburton (HAL.N), both of which report in coming days. On an adjusted basis, Baker Hughes posted a profit of $264 million, or 26 cents a share, up from $141 million a year earlier. The profit topped analysts' forecasts for around 24 cents per share, according to Refinitiv data. The company anticipates double-digit revenue growth in its international oilfield services business in 2023 and modest growth in its North America business, driven largely by public firms. Its oilfield business segments accounted for about 63% of its revenue during the quarter through September.
